The benefits of moving away for university

Posted on May 26, 2015 at 8:18 am

Going to university is one of the most exciting times in your life, so choosing a great place to go to is a critical part of the application process. There are choices to either move away from the family home or to stay nearby. Here are some of the benefits for moving further afield.

The number one benefit of moving further away is the guaranteed freedom this would bring. Some people see university as the main opportunity to really grow up and begin to look after yourself without the help of mum or dad! By moving away to a new city or town, you definitely have to stand on your own two feet from the off!

Another benefit of moving away is the chance to meet a whole new group of friends – by moving to a new area, you instantly expose yourself to a massive new group of people, which may not happen if you choose to stay at home. This new group could open up all sorts of opportunities later down the line, so finding lots of new contacts is generally a great idea.

Finally, by moving to a new place, you get the chance to explore a new area that you might not normally see! Moving from the countryside into a big city is truly the most exciting thing in the world and nothing beats finding cool new places by yourself.

Supply teaching and cover supervisors – what are the differences?

Posted on March 18, 2015 at 2:45 pm

Supply teachers have always been the go-to force to stand in when teachers are either absent or unable to teach their usual classes. Being called in either on the day, or the day before, supply teachers are fully qualified members of staff who are able and willing to cover any lessons. Often, supply teachers are brought into schools when a staff member is due to be off for a substantial period of time.

Cover supervisors, on the other hand, are a relatively new position in schools. Since the government changed their agendas, schools have found it is usually a lot cheaper to employ full time Cover supervisors, rather than hiring supply teachers. Cover supervisors again, cover any lessons in school. They do not have to plan lessons, more they deliver work which has been prepared by teachers already. Cover supervisors are sometimes used as additional support, seeing as they are employed directly by schools.

NQTs – how should you prepare for interview lessons?

Posted on February 28, 2015 at 5:37 pm

Applying for any teaching job generally involves teaching a sample lesson, alongside the actual interview. This can be a daunting process, but here are some tips to help you prepare rather than panic!

1. Find out what is expected of you – this could be a detailed breakdown of the subject content to cover (particularly for a secondary school), or it could be a short description of what you need to do. This is to test your initiative, so do ask questions!

2. Who are you going to be teaching – try to find out the number of students in the class, and if possible if there are any SEND, EAL or G&T learners to provide for. Again this checks your initiative!

3. Make sure you provide your own resources! It is totally unfair to expect the school to provide a class set of any resources you want to use, especially if you are teaching a specialist topic such as art or design. Bring your own so as not to cause a fuss on the day.

If in doubt, relax and enjoy it – the class needs to see that you enjoy yourself and that you love teaching!

Choosing a school

Posted on January 21, 2015 at 12:59 pm

When choosing a school to attend, there are several different types to consider. The main two categories of school are Local Education Authority Schools (LEA) and Independent schools.

LEA schools could be any of the following: foundation schools, community schools, voluntary aided schools or nursery schools. For children with special education needs or learning disabilities, there are lots of LEA special schools. LEA schools have to follow the government’s national curriculum and usually receive most or all of their funding through the local authority.

Independent schools are solely responsible for their own running, so the governing body has more of a say in how the school is run. There are fees to pay to attend, although some schools offer bursaries or subsidies. The pupils at independent schools do not have to follow the national curriculum. There are often strict admissions policies, particularly when applying for bursaries or subsidies for fees.
