NQTs – how should you prepare for interview lessons?

Applying for any teaching job generally involves teaching a sample lesson, alongside the actual interview. This can be a daunting process, but here are some tips to help you prepare rather than panic!

1. Find out what is expected of you – this could be a detailed breakdown of the subject content to cover (particularly for a secondary school), or it could be a short description of what you need to do. This is to test your initiative, so do ask questions!

2. Who are you going to be teaching – try to find out the number of students in the class, and if possible if there are any SEND, EAL or G&T learners to provide for. Again this checks your initiative!

3. Make sure you provide your own resources! It is totally unfair to expect the school to provide a class set of any resources you want to use, especially if you are teaching a specialist topic such as art or design. Bring your own so as not to cause a fuss on the day.

If in doubt, relax and enjoy it – the class needs to see that you enjoy yourself and that you love teaching!
